A day before the resumption of the hearing on the proposed franchise extension of Manila Electric Company (Meralco), Cagayan de Oro City Representative Rufus Rodriguez stressed the importance of ensuring reliable electricity supply for the continued growth of the Philippine economy.

“Reliable, adequate and efficient electricity supply is vital to sustain businesses and the economy. We can also consider it a vital cog in the daily lives of Filipinos,” said Rodriguez, who is among those seeking to renew Meralco’s franchise for another 25 years.
“I need not emphasize the fact and the figures are there if one were to bother to check that Meralco has the highest service level in the country in terms of electricity distribution,” he added.
Rodriguez said many local governments are asking Meralco to take over their jurisdiction, “so it can provide its level of service to many areas that are deprived of reliable electricity.”
