The HD 600 is STILL one of the best headphones.

Despite what’s out there in the consumer headphone market, the Sennheiser HD 600 is one of the few studio-quality headphones aimed at professionals, musicians, and audiophiles. The field gets even narrower when you start talking about open-back headphones instead of the fully closed-back headphones you’re used to. The short story about the HD 600 is that they’re nothing short of remarkable, and you’ll be surprised at how much detail they capture. Read on to see how they fared in our tests.

The aesthetics of studio headphones are almost always secondary. For decades, these types of products have been built to look professional and utilitarian. In fact, many of the best-known, like the Sony MDR line and the Sennheiser HD line, haven’t even seen a significant update since the early 2000s.

The first thing you’ll probably notice about the HD 600 is the see-through mesh exterior of the gigantic ear cups. This allows you to see into the inner workings of the drivers. This isn’t just a cool look (although that is a nice side effect), it’s because the Sennheisers are designed as open-back headphones. We’ll go into more detail about this in the sound quality section, but it does serve a purpose in allowing the audio and soundstage to “breathe” a bit.
