Anna Sawai's Surprise Emmy Nomination on Late Night with Seth Meyers

The first time Seth Meyers' Late Night was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series, he decided to go for a run in New York City without his phone. The previous year's writers' strike had halted production on his NBC late-night show.

"What was great about this year is that it's the first time — there's only been three — but it was the first time our show was nominated when we were in the office, because we had a show that night," Meyers said. "I'll admit I wasn't exactly optimistic about our chances, and I found out the best way I could, which was I could hear our staff cheering through my closed office door. And you know me, I never want to hear my staff and I never want to open my door and have a conversation with them."

Speaking at Deadline's Contenders Television: The Nominees event, Meyers added: "To walk out and share it with a team that was really, genuinely happy was amazing. There were a lot of years where I found out we weren't nominated in the early years of our show by hearing our team's muffled cursing through my door. So I will say this was much better."
