Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld game console was first launched in Japan in late 2004, followed by launches in North America and Europe in spring 2005.

The PSP came in black, with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD that displayed full colour (16.77 million colours) on a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen. It measured 170mm x 74mm x 23mm with a weight of 260g. It also came with the basic features of a portable player, such as built-in stereo speakers, external headphone jack, brightness control and sound mode selection. Buttons and controls inherited the same controls from the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, familiar to fans around the world.

The PSP featured various input/output ports, such as USB 2.0 and 802.11b (WiFi) wireless LAN, which allowed players to access the Internet, play online multiplayer games via the PlayStation Network, and transfer data.
