Prime Video's spy series Mr. & Mrs. Smith has already been nominated for 16 Emmys, including Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama Series (lead actors Donald Glover and Maya Erskine) and Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith – What's in a Name?

In a reimagining of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, co-creators Glover and showrunner Francesca Sloane (who is nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series) wanted the series to have its own character, rather than be a carbon copy.

Sloane was joined on Saturday by director and executive producer Hiro Murai, casting director Carmen Cuba and composer David Fleming for Deadline's Contenders TV: The Nominees.

"People keep saying I came up with this — this needs to be on record that Hiro came up with this," Sloane said. "Our season of Smiths is these C-minus students in an AP course. I think that kind of travels through the whole season as opposed to the movie, which is really fun but super glossy and stylized. We wanted our John and Jane to be your everyday people. Anyone could watch it and relate to it. If it's not you, it could be your neighbor, or it could secretly be your server or your mailman."
