There’s plenty of advice out there on how to trim and declutter your wardrobe, but what do you do when that’s over? You still need to organize and store all of your clothes. Here are the best ways to choose the right layout for your space and stay organized in the future.

Small Closet Organization – How to Create More Storage Space and Keep Everything Tidy!

My clothes are arranged in rainbow order in my closet, just because I like the look and it makes it easy to find exactly what I’m looking for. It’s a popular way to do it, but it doesn’t solve some of the more complex problems. For example, you might consider hanging your clothes so that the things you reach for the most, like jeans or basic T-shirts, are at the front and special occasion items are at the back.

You can categorize by season, by occasion, on a spectrum of casual to business, or whatever framework makes the most sense for you and the way you dress, but the real key is identifying the best order for your hangers and sticking to it. If I pull a red outfit out of my rainbow closet, I know exactly where to hang it when I hang it up again, which means I know where it is when I want to wear it again. That’s why color-coding is a great option for beginners: it can be hard to remember whether you considered it “business casual” or just “casual” when you first came up with your organization plan, so you may have trouble putting it back in the right place so it’s easiest to find when you need it again. Whatever categorization method you come up with, make sure it makes sense for your lifestyle so that you don’t end up with a mess six months from now because it got too complicated to keep track of.

My closet is small and simple, which is not to say the same for my wardrobe, so I’ve found a few ways to double the space and make organizing easier. First, I bought a few of these cube shelves ($49.99 for a 160-cube unit) and propped them up against the back wall so that dresses and longer items can hang across them. This gives me a ton of extra space and specialized compartments that I can make as niche as I want: I have a cube for hoodies, another for crew necks, one for leggings, another for shorts, and so on. I’m a big fan of using the organizational triangle to keep everything in order, which means I follow the rule of keeping like items together and designating a specific spot for each category, and the cubes really help.
