The Last Breath is the latest film about a killer shark to hit the screen, but can it do something new with one of cinema's most tired subgenres?

The Last Breath (2024) Movie Review – Another Shark Flop?

As someone with an undying interest in shark movies, I never know what frustrates me the most. The terrible try-nothing movies that don’t put much money into any aspect of their production? Or is it the movies that get one thing right and the other so bad that a shark wouldn’t eat it?

The Last Breath falls into the latter camp. There is a very commendable understanding of underwater cinematography here. But that focus seems to mean that the story’s oxygen tank has been largely sucked dry.

Before we get into that, the story: A group of college friends find themselves drifting apart seven years after their first time together. Their final reunion comes two whole years after the last. That dynamic creates a certain desperation to have a moment together.
