If you’re American, it’s not uncommon to have all fifty states on your travel list. You’ve probably already checked off a few of the big ones, like New York, California, and Florida. That’s because these states have obvious attractions. No one wonders if there are fun things to do in the Big Apple or along the California coast. The daunting part of visiting all fifty states isn’t visiting the heavyweights; it’s figuring out what to do in states whose capitals you don’t even know about, except for a brief stint in fifth grade.

These states are often underrepresented in the media and often left out of the school curriculum. But that doesn’t make them any less worthwhile for your tourism. They have a lot to offer. Here are the five least visited states in the country, and two reasons to visit them all.

Skiing. Skiing accounts for a huge portion of Vermont’s tourism on any given year, and if you go, you’ll see why. Vermont is dotted with beautiful mountains throughout the state. The state’s premier ski town, Stowe, is often referred to as the “Ski Capital of the East.” What if you’re a ski enthusiast, but your real skiing days are behind you? Don’t worry, Stowe is also home to the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum.

The Quarries. If skiing isn’t your thing, visit Vermont in the summer. One interesting thing about Vermont is that it’s full of quarries, both active and inactive, and they’re all a sight to behold. You can take tours of active quarries like the Rock of Ages, or go swimming or cliff jumping at local quarries for a quick and cheap thrill. Be careful though: swimming in these quarries is often at your own risk.
