Nintendo's upcoming Switch OLED may not be the Switch Pro many were hoping for, but it delivers exactly what I've come to expect from a new Switch.

Nintendo Switch vs. Switch OLED – Which Should You Buy?

For months, rumors and leaks have been swirling that Nintendo would be releasing a Switch Pro with support for 60FPS, 4K resolution, and other fancy features. Earlier this week, Nintendo put an end to the rumor mill when it announced the Switch OLED model. The new Switch is exactly what it sounds like, except instead of the LCD panel of the current model, it has an OLED screen. It's a useful update, but something that many have found disappointing is the lack of an upgrade in resolution output.

While many were hoping for 4K, Nintendo has opted to stick with 1080P output when docked, and maxes out at 720P when playing in handheld mode. It’s not the most ideal solution if you’re looking to experience the Breath of the Wild sequel in 4K, but it’s also not a deal-breaker. In fact, for someone like me who uses the device in handheld mode as opposed to docked, it’s the perfect upgrade to make my portable gaming a little better.

To be honest, I’ve never seen the appeal of a Nintendo Switch that outputs 4K resolution when plugged into your TV. Sure, I love playing new games at higher resolutions — I have my PlayStation 5 hooked up to a 4K TV and use high-resolution monitors on my gaming PC, too — but when it comes to Nintendo games, resolution has never been much of an issue for me.
