It's been a while since Meta started using Facebook and Instagram fact-checking to review Threads posts, but now the company is moving that process into its own silo for Threads.

Why Threads are more important than you think.

Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram and the leader of Threads, posted on the social media service that Threads will be getting a separate fact-checking process from Instagram and Facebook. Previously, posts were compared to those on its sister social sites, and if something was deemed fake on one of those sites, that would also be the determination for a similar Threads post. Now, fact-checking on Threads will be independent of what happens on the other sites.

What exactly does that mean? It’s hard to say. There are no details available beyond the small snippet Mosseri posted to Threads, but it’s likely the same process that third-party fact-checkers currently use for Facebook and Instagram, just within the confines of the Threads app. So what might be considered false information on one social network might not be on another, depending on the context in which it’s found.

Apparently, the change to the fact-checking process has already been implemented, because Mosseri said, “Now fact-checkers can review Threads content themselves.” So if you’re curious about what it might change, keep an eye on your Threads posts. That might be the best way to spot the differences, if any.
