Twitter’s new efforts to verify accounts have experts worried that it’s not enough to combat spam and trolls. For some, it could even be dangerous.

Twitter confirmed late last week that it plans to add the badge to accounts with verified phone numbers, saying it could help people legitimize their accounts. But several experts have already pointed to potential issues that could impact the usability of such a badge.

"It's very easy to get phone numbers, even using numbers with zip codes that are specific to a certain area," Linda Pophal, a consultant with Strategic Communications and a digital marketing specialist, told Lifewire via direct message. "So I think the potential for spammers and spambots will still exist to some extent," despite Twitter's plans.

Twitter recently told TechCrunch that it was testing the new badges to let people add context to their accounts. It comes as the company continues to face intense scrutiny over the number of bot accounts on its platform. Former potential owner Elon Musk is taking legal action over his decision to back out of a takeover of the company, citing the number of bot accounts as a reason. That has led some experts to question the motives behind the new badges.
