Apple’s new M2 MacBook Pro is so immersive for most people that it’s like driving an SUV to the local store instead of simply walking or biking.

You know who complained that the M1 MacBook Pros were too slow? No one. And yet here we are, with an even more impressive pro laptop from Apple, largely unchanged beyond the M2 Pro and M2 Max systems-on-a-chip (SoC) that power them and a horrible new default wallpaper. For most of us, that extra power will be wasted, but for some users, the extra power will be worth the asking price.

“Professionals and power users who want high performance for video editing, 3D rendering, scientific simulations and other demanding applications will likely purchase the M2 Pro chips,” Alaa Negeda, a technology consultant and CTO for AlxTel, told Lifewire via email.

Let’s get the raw specs out of the way first. In terms of CPU, the new M2 MacBook Pros are about 20 percent faster than the already-speedy M1 versions, and 30 percent faster in the GPU department. There are more processing cores and a faster media engine (a dedicated chip for processing video and the like), and you can now load these machines up with up to 96GB of RAM (up from up to 64GB in the M1 Pros).
