Apple hides far too many things deep within the Mac Settings app. There’s no quick way to do things like turn dark mode on or off, hide the menu bar, or show hidden files. You have to dig into the settings every time.

8 Hidden Settings to Speed Up Your Mac!

You may want to tweak settings like this on a regular basis. For example, I only use Dark Mode on cloudy days, and would rather toggle it on or off myself. You may want to hide the menu bar and dock when you need to concentrate, and then turn them back on when you want to socialize. Apple doesn’t make this kind of on-the-fly adjustment easy, but there is a workaround.

OnlySwitch is a free (donations appreciated) and open-source application that lets you quickly change these and other options, while also letting you do things like hide unwanted menu bar icons and prevent your Mac from going to sleep. Open OnlySwitch for the first time and you’ll notice a new icon that’s annoyingly close to the Control Center (don’t worry, you can change that in the settings). Click on this icon and you’ll see all sorts of quick toggles, which you can quickly turn on and off.

That would be enough for me to recommend an application, but OnlySwitch goes further and offers several features that you would otherwise need a dedicated application for. There is a built-in internet radio, a Pomodoro timer, and even a way to hide menu bar icons.
