Lam, 67, had temporarily taken over as party leader on July 18, the day before Trong's death, as his health deteriorated.

Party officials unanimously supported Lam's nomination, officials said at a news conference.

In his speech to the delegates, he promised to inherit and promote Trong's legacy, not to make any changes to the Southeast Asian country's foreign policy, to focus on achieving socio-economic development goals and to continue Vietnam's anti-corruption campaign.
