The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is the blue error message that takes up the entire screen and often appears after a serious system crash in a Windows operating system.

This term is actually just the general name for what is technically called a stop message or stop error.
The example here on this page is a BSOD like you see in Windows 8 or newer. Earlier versions of Windows looked a bit less friendly.
The often confusing text on the Blue Screen of Death often lists all the files involved in the crash, including device drivers that may be the cause. It also often includes a brief, often cryptic, description of what you can do to fix the problem.
