A flash drive is a small, highly portable storage device that, unlike an optical drive or a traditional hard drive, has no moving parts.

Computer Basics: What is a Flash Drive?

Flash drives connect to computers and other devices using a built-in USB Type-A or USB-C connector, making them a combination of a USB device and a cable.

Flash drives are often referred to as pen drives, thumb drives, or jump drives. The terms USB drive and solid-state drive (SSD) are also sometimes used, but usually refer to larger, not so mobile USB-based storage devices such as external hard drives.

To use a flash drive, simply insert it into an available USB port on your computer.
