This article explains what a GIF is, how to open one on your computer or phone, how to create your own or edit an existing GIF, and how to convert a GIF to another image or video format.

WHAT IS A POISON?

A file with the GIF file extension is a Graphical Interchange Format file. Most people use GIFs (pronounced "gif" or "jiff") to create animated images to share on social media.

Although GIFs do not contain any audio data, they are often seen online as a way to share video clips. Websites also often use them to display animated objects such as buttons or header images. Because they are stored in a lossless format, image quality is not degraded when used with GIF compression.

On almost all operating systems, most web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) open online GIFs without any problems: you don't need another program on your computer. Open local GIFs using the Open menu, or alternatively by dragging and dropping them into the browser window.
