Monitors are similar to TVs, but they usually display information at a much higher resolution. In addition, unlike TVs, monitors are usually placed on a desk instead of on a wall. A monitor is sometimes also called a screen, display, video display, video display terminal, video display unit, or video screen.
On a desktop computer, the monitor is connected via a cable to a port on the computer's video card or motherboard. Even though the monitor is outside the main body of the computer, it is an essential part of the system.
It is important to distinguish between the monitor and the computer itself, especially on a desktop system. Turning off a monitor that is connected to the computer is not the same as turning off the computer itself, whose components (such as the hard drive and video card) are located inside the computer case.
