A NEF file is a Nikon Raw Image file. It is short for Nikon Electronic Format and is only used on Nikon cameras.
Like other RAW image files, NEF files retain all of the images captured by the camera before any processing has taken place, including metadata such as the camera and lens model.
The NEF file format is based on TIFF.
