A portable charger, sometimes called a power bank, is a reusable battery that is small enough to fit in your hand. Covered in a protective casing, it can be connected to any input and output source, allowing you to charge multiple devices (e.g. a smartphone or a laptop) almost anywhere without the need for an electrical outlet.

Smartphones use battery capacities measured in milliampere hours. These capacities range from 2,000 mAh to 5,000 mAh, although there are occasional variations. Typical battery banks used to power phones and laptops also have battery capacities measured in milliampere hours, making it easy to determine what size charger you need for a specific device.

Instead of charging your phone, tablet or other device from a wall socket, you charge it with the power stored in the portable charger. You do this by plugging the charger (or charging cable) into the device that needs power.

Given the short lifespan of many smartphones, the popular and best portable chargers are USB devices. These are usually on the smaller side and can easily fit in a pocket or bag, and will extend the battery life of your phone.
