Google releases monthly updates for its Pixel smartphone line. These updates include performance improvements and add-on features to existing user interfaces. In its latest release for the month of March, Google unveiled a new feature called “Firm Press.”

Firm Press is similar to Apple’s 3D Touch experience, but instead of using hardware feedback, Firm Press relies on software optimization. Google has a long history of using its software optimization magic to improve everyday hardware found in other devices.

This is very well documented with their Camera app producing stunning images on everyday sensors found on smartphones from other manufacturers. Google’s Firm Press uses machine learning to determine how much pressure you are applying to the screen.
