A new report from Omdia, commissioned by the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas, the International Union of Cinemas and the Europe Cinemas network, reveals the extent to which European countries’ continued investment in their own local offerings has enabled regional box offices to flourish.

Europe Cinemas, an organization that focuses exclusively on the region’s own films rather than American blockbusters, continues to add more existing screens to its network of theaters to show more locally produced films. As a result, Europe’s collective box office has reached roughly pre-pandemic levels, with a total of $1.8 billion in 2023 the first to match any of the years before 2020.
