What's Missing at HBO MAX's Launch?

HBO and WarnerMedia have launched HBO Max, a direct-to-consumer streaming service that will offer users all the goodies of the former’s standalone HBO Now subscription, along with a bunch of additional content. HBO Max will feature shows and movies from WarnerMedia like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Doctor Who, Wonder Woman, movies from DC Films, and a bunch of new content dubbed Max Originals.

Why did they remove HBO from HBO Max?

While HBO Max offers a fairly large library of movies and TV shows with cross-platform support, the service still lacks a few things that competitors offer to their customers. In this post, we will talk about some of the features that are currently missing from HBO Max.

At the time of launch, HBO Max does not offer 4K resolution content or high dynamic range support. The service only supports content up to 1080p Full HD, which isn’t good enough considering the fact that the price you’ll pay for HBO Max is higher than what you’d pay for other streaming services. Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV+, on the other hand, all offer 4K content and DOLBY HDR, albeit on their top-tier plans.

HBO Max doesn’t give you a way to select what resolution you want to watch a show or movie at. This means that if you’re watching on metered data, you can’t select a lower quality stream to save as much data as possible. And if you’re watching on high speed data, you don’t have a manual switch to select a higher streaming quality.
