A HomePod smart speaker with a screen would be a great device, so why can't Apple just make one now?

The technology is here. A HomePod with a screen could literally be an iPhone screen with the HomePod’s great speakers behind it. So what’s the holdup? After all, smart speakers with screens aren’t exactly new. Amazon has the Echo Show, and Google has its Nest. Maybe Apple just hasn’t gotten the software side of things right yet. Or maybe it’s hampered by its own aversion to allowing more than one user to log into an iOS device. Whatever the reason, it’s a shame, because a HomePod with a screen would be awesome.
"My wife often FaceTimes with her sister in the mornings before work while she's making breakfast. She props her phone up on the stand and sometimes sends the audio to the HomePod in the kitchen while she's loudly cooking breakfast. A device like this would be great for her," HomePod owner Seek3r wrote in a MacRumors forum thread that Lifewire participated in.
At the risk of stating the obvious: there are two parts to a smart screen/speaker, and Apple is unmatched at making both. The regular HomePod is already the best smart speaker you can buy in terms of sound quality. And the iPhone’s screen is just as hard to beat. Now, you don’t really need a fancy screen if you’re just checking reminders, choosing music, and so on, but Apple is Apple, so it probably does a bit more than that.
