Why Samsung Dropped the Headphone Jack

The 3.5mm stereo TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) jack has been around for a long time. The original 6.35mm version dates back to the late 19th century when it was used in telephone exchanges.

The 3.5mm version came out in the 1950s and is still widely used. That means you can use a headset from almost three quarters of a century ago with a smartphone from 2019.

Unless you bought one of 2019’s flagship smartphones. It’s been a long time coming, but smartphone manufacturers are starting to ditch the venerable headphone jack altogether. It’s led to much wailing and gnashing of teeth, but ultimately the plucky little soundhole will likely end up as an odd bit of tech history.
