A new report shows that major telecom companies will do just about anything to thwart net neutrality, including abusing your personal information to influence decisions by the Federal Communications Commission.

How the End of Net Neutrality Could Change the Internet

The report, released this week by New York’s attorney general, found that millions of submissions to the FCC in 2017 calling for net neutrality to be repealed were not only bogus, but the result of a secret campaign funded by major broadband companies that lured consumers with promises of freebies and rewards.

Experts say this isn’t the only time big telecoms have abused their power. It’s further proof that strong net neutrality laws are needed to protect the American people.

“This great investigative work by the New York Attorney General should serve as a warning to policymakers and the public to take a closer look at the motives of these companies,” Lucile Vareine, senior staff manager of corporate communications at Mozilla, told Lifewire in an email.
