When we think of neurotechnology, many of us think of Black Mirror-style technology. However, experts say the future of neurotechnology lies in simple consumer devices that can help us in our daily lives.

Companies are producing consumer-facing devices based on neuroscience to keep our brains functioning optimally. While the market for these consumer devices is not as popular as wearable smartwatches, consumers could adopt these devices in the coming decade.

“The next revolution is really going to be the brain, and we want to make that useful for everyday people, not just people who can afford it,” Iain McIntyre, humm's CEO and co-founder, told Lifewire in a phone interview.

One of the consumer devices in the works is humm: a patch that promises to help you learn faster and more efficiently by sending signals to your brain. It’s launching in beta this year and will be available to the general public in early 2022.
